There are many reasons why people kill animals:
1) For food, some people need to kill animals and eat them to survive
2) For stuff, ex fur, horns etc.
3) To fix overpopulation, an overpopulated animal species can harm the environment and extinct species below it in the food chain
4) For fun/trophies
5) Road kill (animals fault, it should have looked before crossing the road)
6) Animal testing, usually not intended to kill animals, but some end up dying

animals are cute,
animals are fuzzy,
you shouldn't harm them,
cuz that ain't funny.

One of the biggest problems in animal cruelty is scientific whaling in the pacific. Perhaps the most conspicuous instances of scientific whaling occur in Japan, supported by the Japanese government. The JARPA programs--JARPA I in the Antarctic and JARPA II in the North-West Pacific--allow significant numbers of whales to be taken and killed in the name of research.

The International Whaling Commission, or IWC, is reporting alarmingly low numbers of many whale species in the North-West Pacific. Grey whales are significantly endangered in the region, with rough population estimates well below 200. Although Japan has ceased commercial whaling, the JARPA programs allow for the removal of around 600 Minke whales, 50 Brydes whales, 100 Sei whales, 10 Fin whales, and 10 Sperm whales each year.

Although many steps are being taken to shut down the JARPA programs, Australia leading the way, Japan continues to find loopholes with which to continue the practice. Researchers say they are gaining valuable information, but it begs the question of whether or not it is ethical. Whaling is no longer a supported commercial practice, and as such the necessity for new information about whales is dwindling. People campaigned to stop whales from being hunted for commercial use, and it's about time they were freed from scientific hunting as well.

A pademelon is any of seven species of small marsupials of the genus Thylogale. They are usually found in forests. Pademelons are the smallest of the macropods. The name is a corruption of badimaliyan, from the Dharuk Aboriginal language of Port Jackson.
